Kate Spade Keds and Saturday Sneaks

Be still my heart.  Keds shoes bring back glorious memories of elementary school and I’ve been considering a new pair over the past year or so, but this partnership with Kate Spade seals the deal.

Sizes are selling out quickly, but hopefully they’ll release more.  Find them here.

Park City Picks

R and I lived in Park City for 2 years, but worked there for a total of 5.  I often get asked for my recommendations for the area, so I thought I would share my favorite picks for food, drinks, and otherwise.

There are 3 places to ski in Park City during the winter, Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR as the locals call it), Deer Valley and Canyons Resort (my former stomping grounds).  Each is unique in their own way, and I like them all for different reasons.  My absolute favorite is Canyons – it’s varied in terrain, easy to get away from the crowds and there literally is never a lift line once you get to the outer skirts of the area.  The resort is a lot different from when I worked there due to major expansion, re-branding, and re-structuring of the base area.  The ski terrain remains the same though, and you truly can’t beat it if you’re looking to get some steeps in the morning and shred groomies in the afternoon.  Plus fancy apres at The Farm (where R used to work) is amaze-balls.

My second favorite to ski is Deer Valley.  When we lived in PC, my friend Emily was (still is) the DV PR chick.  We would have the BEST days skiing together, and she was always showing me new terrain.  Plus, I saw a marriage proposal getting off one of the lifts (the girl said yes), which is certainly memorable.  I can NEVER resist a DV cookie, especially when they come straight out of the oven, chocolate chips still gooey.  Pffff, my mouth is watering.

PCMR is probs my least fave to ski, but my most fave to apres.  The base is home to the Pig Pen Saloon, one of my besties, Kim’s family owns the place, and I waitressed there for a couple of years.  Also, where I worked during my quarter life crisis post quitting my job at Canyons.  The Pig Pen is home to the famous Pig Burger, which is totes shareable and drinks are reasonably priced.

A trip to PC is not complete without an evening on Main Street.  There are unlimited options to eat and during our time in town, R and I made our way through most of them.

Top high end (super high end, like really high end): Talisker on Main, no it is not closed to the public, yes you can eat here.  You will not regret this choice. It’s good, like really good.  Innovative in flavors, you will be blown away.  Buuuuut – as if I haven’t made it clear enough, expect to spend top dolla’.

Mid-range (still pretty high end): Silver, the menu is constantly changing, but when we were there they had some sort of Hawaiian sweet bread that I can’t stop thinking about.  The 2nd floor turns into a full on dance party complete with DJ on weekend nights.  Our friend Shawn is the GM, and he’s infinitely knowledgeable about wine and spirits and getting around the Utah drinking laws.

Monday night: Ladies Night at Butcher’s.  This is a no joke chocolate cake/cheap dranks situation if you are a chick.

Sushi: What? Sushi in Utah, but it’s landlocked?  Okay, whatevs, that’s what planes are for, to fly in fresh, delicious fish.  Oishi (address is Main Street but it’s tucked behind near the Marriott) is the spot.  We had several rowdy nights there (during the summer, they run 50% off specials for “locals”), it was a frequent spot for us to meet up with friends year-round.

Where can I eat for cheap? Tuesdays at O’Shucks, our fave dive bar.  As far as I know they still do $3 burger night on Tuesdays, it used to be $3 schooner night too, but Utah has ever-changing liquor laws, something about not being able to reduce the price of beer or something…

No Name Saloon – locals and non-locals alike flock here for the buffalo burgers, excellent service, and clean bathrooms.  I can’t recommend No Name enough.

Where should I absolutely go while in PC?  High West is home to Utah’s first distillery since the prohibition, they crank out good eats, but even better drinks.  I’m partial to the Peach Vodka mixed with soda water.  However, the whiskey is where they shine.  The building is awesome, and they are always willing to give a tour.  Also, it’s technically ski-in/ski-out if you are skiing PCMR.

A couple of don’t miss events if you have the chance during the winter:

World-Cup moguls and aerials at Deer Valley, even better if you can get on the VIP list where the wine flows like….well wine, and the food is SO delicious.

Pond Skimming/Spring Gruv at Canyons – no question, the event that announces spring in Utah.  Everyone dresses in costumes, the mood is fantastic, and there’s a free concert at the base afterwords.  The pond skimming part is 100 people dressed in costumes trying to make it across a 100 ft pond dug into the snow and filled with snow making water, yeah it’s usually about 40 degree water tops.  It’s hilarious and an overall giant party.

Always grab a local paper (The Park Record) because there are coupons inside for restaurants and weekly happenings for the area.

PC is certainly a unique town, and much different then any other ski town in its sheer accessibility to a major airport.  Our friends and the locals in general live in the area because of the lifestyle.  There is an overall commitment to health, happiness, and the environment.  Often times I would be driving from my office to the resort and see the trails full of cross country skiers during the winter and bikers during the summer, wondering if these people ever worked.  R and I certainly miss living there and miss our friends even more.

Enjoy!

Etsy Finds: Atlas Past Bags

I’ve been looking forward to the UPS Flea Market for a couple of weeks.  I was cruising the list of featured vendors on the Puget Sound Women’s League Facebook page and was thrilled when I clicked through to the Atlas Past Etsy page.  Based in Tacoma, she has an eye for matching textures and patterns. Can’t wait to see the bags in person tomorrow.  Here are some of my faves:

Craigslist Finds: Daybeds

My future sis-in-law has been searching for daybeds for their new house.  I think she found what she’s looking for but, here are a couple awesome ones still out there (in the Seattle area).

resthardwareListed for $100 – Restoration Hardware Ratan Style

Would be a great seating area divider in a long living room or perfect for a guest room/office.

crateandbarrelredCrate and Barrel $600
Pillows can be switched to the ends or the back so works as a couch or daybed. $600 is a little high, I would email initially with a low offer and see if they will come down if they don’t get rid of it in a week or so.

teakdaybedSolid Teak Daybed from Indonesia – $650

They probably won’t come down on the price on this one but it looks like there is a Christmas Tree in the pic and it’s February so they’ve probably been trying to sell it for awhile.  With some bright pillows this could look very exotic-chic.

antiquemahoganyMahogany Couch – $500

Okay – not really a daybed, but still pretty cool.

Looking for a unique piece for your house? I’m happy to cruise CL for some finds.

Garden Guest Room

It has been an evolving task to get everything settled into our new house.  We’ve been here for nearly a year and we’re starting to get used to the space.  One of my favorite rooms to decorate has been our guest room.  When we moved in, there were glow in the dark stars painted in a border around the ceiling and enough holes in the walls I can still tell where there are spots I missed with the spray texture.  The green paint color became a guide for the whole decor scheme.

Lamp – Ikea
Nightstand – $5 from Relay for Life Garage Sale painted with ACE Gloss Purple Spray Paint

IMG_7682Curtains and curtain rod – Pottery Barn via Garage Sale
Bamboo Ladder – Craigslist (West Elm makes one similar but says sold out right now)
Towels – Target

I’m constantly scouring Craigslist for elements that have a bit of personality.  If you are looking for something for your place let me know and I am happy to send some CL finds your way.

There are still a couple things left to do in this room including replacing the current overhead light and replacing the closet door pulls. (I picked up some at Anthropologie on sale, but realized that each room has 2 closets with 2 doors meaning 4 total pulls needed per room. *ding dong moment).

These mittens are awesome!

My friend sent me the link to Astis Mittens today and I was instantly smitten.  Obvi, I appreciate a brand who’s logo states “Stay warm, stay positive.”   Warm hands always equal happy thoughts.  I have a feeling that as soon as you slip your hands into that leather that is lined with moisture wicking polertec, they are instantly cozy.  My favorite is the Sacagawea, the print reminds of Scandinavian art and the tan leather combined with greyish fur is so versatile.  These babies are a splurge, but the Astis site promises your hands will stay toasty whether you are skiing deep in the backcountry or running errands around town and that they will last you for-ev-er.

The Wild Africa

I remember watching the documentary Invisible Children – maybe in high school?  I was blown away by the story of children who had been brainwashed into being part of gruesome violence.  We are very lucky here in the United States.

Years later, as I was graduating from college, I traveled to Kenya (a much different trip then S had).  During my short stay, I spent 2 of the weeks staying in a convent/hospital with the other students in my program. Our age group was from 18-25, which led to a very interesting dynamic.  The time spent with the nuns was eye opening to say the least.

5930_550270162459_4277054_n

One night, I awoke to yelling, and the nuns rushing around.  Our quarters were locked, and I knew we were safe.  The next morning, one of the nuns told me that they had admitted a man in the middle of the night because he had been cut by a machete.  According to the nun, the man had been trying to fight off his neighbor who was stealing his chicken.  Several days later, I saw him sitting outside his hospital room, with one side of his face and his arm bandaged.

Each day we would walk to a different school where we would break into groups and participate in different activities.  All of the children were required to wear a uniform to go to school, so in one of the most poor ones, often times families with more then one child would switch who would wear the uniform and go to school that day.  In the lowest end school, most of the children would eat their only meal of the day for lunch. Usually a bowl of porridge.  The entire community suffered greatly from lack of water and it was obvious.  Our last day of the program we hosted a carnival for the 4 schools in the area at the Catholic Elementary Property.  The head sister was in charge of informing the principals of the other schools about the carnival.  Somehow the message did not get passed.  Our group showed up ready to host the carnival and the only children there were from Sister Mary’s classrooms.  Our group leaders protested and finally the other schools showed up.

5930_550267782229_212643_n

I don’t want to say that I am jaded now because of my trip to Kenya, but the further I delved into the culture, the more motives I found myself questioning.  I absolutely believe that what I helped accomplish in Kenya made a difference on the children, but my concern is that it made those children think that mzungu’s (white people) are only good for handouts.  I can only imagine what the conversations were at home when the kids walked in with gifts from us – stickers, frisbees, and coloring crayons.

5930_550268700389_4615985_n

My trip to Kenya was life changing in a lot of ways.  Even though I was only there for a short time, when I came back I felt unsure of my future and a little culture shocked.  Lunch with my boss, her 4 year old daughter, and her daughter’s friend led me to tears as the girls played with their food instead of eating it.  Half of the meal was thrown away.  I couldn’t help but think about when I was a kid and someone said, “there are starving children in Africa.”  Those words started to have meaning.  I bawled to R about what had happened at that lunch and he looked me straight in the eye and said, “What are you going to send your grilled cheese to Kenya, Hannah?”

5930_550268071649_7715394_n

He was right. What was I going to do for those kids from across the world.  Even mailing packages to them was not an option.  I received a letter from a friend I had met and it had clearly been opened already.

I don’t want to discount my experiences in Kenya.  I had a fantastic time.  I met extremely hardworking women and believe that some causes are SO worth it.  But on the other hand, some of the other people I met were liars, back stabbers, and wanted to take advantage of the generosity that was given to them.

I recently came across Falling Whistles.  I’ll admit, my initial thought was, “How can this possibly help in Congo?”  I read every single page on their website, learning more about Congo and about their efforts.  Their style of working with Congolese contacts instead of sending our American experts, I can appreciate.  When there is a common goal, there is a common path.  Maybe that’s what caused my hurt in Kenya, every person I met had a different goal.  They wanted so much from our group, and we couldn’t give all that they desired.  I believe that Falling Whistles will be able to help create Peace, their efforts are clearly making some sort of difference if they have 55,000 whistle blowers on board and counting.

We are lucky in the United States.  We can research and support non-profits of any type, international and domestic.  What means something to you?
